Prepare for Your FAA Practical Test

A successful practical test begins before test day. Applicants should arrive organized, prepared, and ready to present required documents, aircraft records, endorsements, and application materials.

This page is intended to help applicants, instructors, and flight schools reduce avoidable delays and ensure the practical test can begin as scheduled.

Quick Checklist

  • IACRA application complete and accurate

  • Required endorsements complete

  • Knowledge test report available, if required

  • Pilot certificate and identification available

  • Medical certificate or BasicMed documentation available, if applicable

  • Logbook or electronic logbook ready for review

  • Aircraft documents available

  • Aircraft maintenance records available

  • Aircraft airworthy and appropriate for the test

  • Weather and aircraft availability reviewed

  • Recheck, retest, or continuation documents available, if applicable

Before You Schedule

Before requesting an appointment, please confirm that you are eligible, endorsed, and ready for the practical test.

Applicants should review the applicable Airman Certification Standards or Practical Test Standards, confirm that their IACRA application is complete, and ensure that all aircraft documents and maintenance records are available for review.

A practical test may not begin if required documents, endorsements, aircraft records, or applicant qualifications are incomplete.

Applicant Documents

Please bring or have access to the following, as applicable:

  • Government-issued photo identification

  • Pilot certificate

  • Medical certificate or BasicMed documentation, as applicable

  • Knowledge test report, if required

  • Logbook or electronic logbook records

  • Required endorsements

  • Completed IACRA application information

  • Any previous notice of disapproval, letter of discontinuance, or related documents, if applicable

Applicants using electronic logbooks should ensure required endorsements, flight time totals, and aeronautical experience records are easy to locate and verify.

IACRA Application

Applicants should ensure their IACRA application is complete, accurate, and ready for examiner review before the appointment.

Please carefully review:

  • Applicant name and certificate information

  • Certificate or rating sought

  • Aircraft category and class

  • Flight time and experience entries

  • Recommending instructor information

  • Required signatures

  • Application status

Errors or incomplete information in IACRA may delay or prevent the practical test from beginning.

Instructor Endorsements

Required endorsements must be complete, accurate, and appropriate for the certificate or rating sought.

Applicants and instructors should verify that endorsements align with the applicable FAA requirements and the appropriate Airman Certification Standards or Practical Test Standards.

Incorrect, incomplete, missing, or outdated endorsements may prevent the test from beginning.

Knowledge Test Report

If a knowledge test is required for the certificate or rating sought, the applicant should ensure the knowledge test report is available and valid.

Applicants should be prepared to discuss missed knowledge test areas, applicable subject matter, and the relevant standards for the practical test.

Aircraft Documents and Records

The aircraft used for the practical test must be appropriate and airworthy.

Please ensure the following items are available for review, as applicable:

  • Airworthiness certificate

  • Registration certificate

  • Operating limitations or approved aircraft flight manual

  • Weight and balance information

  • Equipment list, if applicable

  • Required inspection records

  • Maintenance logbooks or acceptable maintenance record access

  • Required placards and documents

  • Current aircraft status and discrepancy information

Aircraft maintenance records should clearly show required inspections and compliance items.

Aircraft Readiness

Applicants should confirm that the aircraft is suitable for all required tasks in the applicable practical test.

Before the appointment, consider:

  • Aircraft airworthiness

  • Required inspections

  • Equipment required for the test

  • Aircraft performance

  • Fuel planning

  • Weight and balance

  • Weather suitability

  • Airport and airspace considerations

  • Aircraft insurance or rental authorization, if applicable

If the aircraft is not appropriate, available, or airworthy, the test may be delayed, discontinued, or unable to begin.

Common Reasons a Test Cannot Begin

A practical test may be delayed or unable to begin for reasons including:

  • Incomplete or incorrect IACRA application

  • Missing applicant or instructor signatures

  • Missing or incorrect endorsements

  • Missing knowledge test report

  • Incomplete aircraft documents

  • Incomplete maintenance records

  • Aircraft not airworthy or not appropriate for the test

  • Applicant does not meet eligibility requirements

  • Identification, certificate, or medical documentation issues

  • Weather conditions unsuitable for the test

  • Aircraft equipment not appropriate for required tasks

Careful preparation helps avoid these issues.

Rechecks, Retests, and Continuations

For a recheck, retest, or continuation, bring all documents from the previous practical test, including any notice of disapproval or letter of discontinuance.

Applicants should also bring evidence of any required additional training and endorsements.

Please select the correct appointment type when scheduling.

Weather and Scheduling

Applicants should review weather, aircraft availability, and operational conditions before the appointment.

If weather, aircraft status, or applicant readiness may affect the practical test, communicate as early as practical.

Scheduling availability is limited and released on a rolling seven-day basis. If no appointment times are visible, no practical test appointments are currently available.

Final Preparation Reminder

Before test day, review the applicable Airman Certification Standards or Practical Test Standards, confirm your documents, coordinate with your instructor or flight school, and arrive prepared to begin.

The goal is to arrive organized, qualified, and ready for a professional FAA practical test experience.
